Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden

Discover the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) Botanic Garden, Pamplemousses

Welcome to the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. Globally renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and historic charm, the SSR Botanic Garden (formerly the Royal Botanic Garden) is a must-visit tropical paradise located just 10 km northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius.

A Rich Botanical History

Established in 1736 by French Governor Mahรฉ de Labourdonnais, the site began as a humble vegetable plot for the Mon Plaisir estate. It later transformed into a world-class plant nursery under famed intendant Pierre Poivre, who famously smuggled coveted spices like nutmeg and cloves to the island. Over nearly three centuries, visionary botanists like Nicholas Cรฉrรฉ and Wencelas Bojer introduced iconic species, including the vibrant Flamboyant tree and the majestic Royal Palm.

In 1988, the garden was officially renamed in honor of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius.

Location: Pamplemousses, Mauritius (Named after the Dutch-introduced 'Pamplemoussier' citrus tree)
